Dementia is becoming a more common problem as life expectancy in the West lengthens. Now there’s a distance learning Masters degree for those wishing to specialise. Stirling’s Department of Applied Social Science’s course is the first online MSc in Dementia Studies in the UK. In following person-centred care principles, the programme places the person with dementia at the very centre of developing our understanding.

The programme has enabled students to develop practice within their existing posts, while some previous students have moved to more specialised or promoted posts. It has also encouraged past students to continue with research. Other students have become involved in training initiatives.

MSc students develop an advanced understanding of multi-disciplinary perspectives about dementia and approaches to dementia care.

How do I learn?
Each module commences with a one or two-day introductory session at the University. For students who advance to the MSc there are a further two core modules: research methods and the dissertation. Optional modules are not offered every semester.

All modules are assessed through coursework and students experience a range of assessment including 4,500-word essays, evaluation reports, research proposals and a 15,000-word research dissertation.

All teaching uses text and web-based distance learning materials. The specially designed interactive website enables student interaction and tutorial support. Supplementary reading/video extracts will be included on a CD-Rom. Special emphasis will be placed on a collaborative and problem-solving approach to learning and on encouraging reflective practice.

What do I learn?
Modules explore subjects covering physiological and practical issues. They include: An Exploration of the Experiences of People with Dementia; Accommodation, Technology and Care; Assessment and Management of Dementia Care; Approaches to Working with People with Dementia; Life History and Reminiscence; Neglected Issues in Dementia Care and Younger Onset Dementia.

Students undertaking the MSc complete an independent piece of research in a substantive area of their choice.

How do I get in?
The programme is intended for experienced professionals from all relevant disciplines. Those who apply should have a university degree in a relevant field or equivalent qualification. Evidence of extensive practice experience and previous study will also be considered.

How long does it take?
The MSc can be studied over four years; the diploma over three; the certificate over 18 months.

How much does it cost?
For UK students, fees are £9,560. Overseas students pay £20,220.
