Students preparing for Graduate Fashion Week, to be held in London in June, are hoping a leading fashion label will snap them up. Those designers who are successful will be embarking on a career in the fourth largest fashion market in the world, worth more than £1bn annually.

London College of Fashion, part of the University of the Arts, offers a number of online degrees for those who want a career in fashion but can’t study full-time. These include part-time BA degrees in Fashion Culture; Design and Realisation; Fashion Business; and a Foundation Degree in Fashion Marketing and promotion.

The online Foundation Degree is an ideal way to smoothe the path for a career in fashion PR.

What do I learn?

The depth and range of study allows students to access careers in a wide range of commercial enterprises related to the fashion industries. Students gain experience of current professional practice through simulated industrial projects and activities developed in conjunction with practitioners.

Students get the opportunity to undertake work-based learning and gain experience of the working practices of the fashion marketing, media and promotion industries.

The programme is designed to give an insight into the contemporary employment market. The use of IT and electronic communication for presentation and promotional purposes is also embedded in the course.

The Personal and Professional Development programme will enable students to develop a portfolio of transferable skills relevant to future employment and further study. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively and to develop the appropriate interpersonal skills for fashion and related industries.

What is a foundation degree?

The course is a two-year degree programme equivalent to the first two years of a BA. It offers a blend of vocational and theoretical learning that gives students the learning experience to help kick-start or further their career within the fashion industry. The foundation degree can lead on to a BA honours degree if desired.

How do I learn?

The course is followed entirely online with a series of web seminars and tutorials taking place throughout the academic year.

Current students recommend not working (in employment) more than 24 hours per week. On average around 20 to 30 hours per week study are required.

Assignments are sent to the assignments folder on Blackboard and students are emailed the briefing.

Assessment is based on the unit learning outcomes, which are described at the beginning of each brief. Constantly referring to these will enable you to structure your studies and reach the required outcomes.

Research is essential in producing a final piece of work. Although this does not form part of the final piece, it will make a large contribution.

Though there is support, online students are expected to be self-starters.

What happens next?

Graduates from this course are well placed to find employment in all areas of fashion marketing and promotion including marketing, brand management, public relations, advertising, retail and merchandising.

How long does it take?

Two years.

How much does it cost?

Home and EU students pay £3,145 annually; international students pay £10,400

How do I get in?

You’ll need one A-level at grade C in a related subject or above plus four GCSE passes at grade C or above (including Maths and English). Other qualifications such as BTEC National Diplomas and GNVQs are considered. Mature applicants are welcome with relevant work experience and some evidence of academic achievement.

Members of the course team interview applicants. The interview process will include an online aptitude test.

What do current students say?

Distance learning student Emma Lamb: “The online group of students I have studied with this year have been very friendly and you will all meet with each other during enrolment and an induction, where you will hopefully form new relationships. You will be encouraged to participate in group discussions and team building sessions.”

What happens next?

LCF students are well placed for a career in fashion thanks to the college’s prestige and immense contacts book. Careers in fashion PR, event management, marketing and fashion journalism are the most popular choices for graduates.
